More than health researchers, students and industry professionals — many connected to the University of Toronto — gathered at JLABS Toronto Monday for an interdisciplinary networking event designed to spark innovation and entrepreneurship. The rest of the evening was dedicated to making connections between people who might not normally cross paths. It’s easier said than done given the size of Toronto’s life sciences cluster. To help facilitate interactions, student volunteers wandered the room with flashing red LED lights dangling from their lanyards. A similar networking event was held last year that incorporated a speed-dating format. But organizers later decided a less-structured approach was more likely to yield the desired results. The subject who is truly loyal to the Chief Magistrate will neither advise nor submit to arbitrary measures. This article was published more than 9 years ago. Some information in it may no longer be current. Dressed in a dark suit, year-old Emma Costante joins both hands with a fellow second-year University of Toronto law student in what looks like a prayer. She’s says it’s nothing spiritual. Some of her fellow students pacing nearby, outside a conference room at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, probably are seeking help from on high.
In a few minutes, they will all walk into an intimidating round of quick summer-job interviews – often likened to speed-dating – that could determine whether they realize their dreams of a career on Bay Street. But Ms. Costante says she’s just trying to warm up her fingers before shaking hands with potential employers, after she heard that a friend was chided for her cold hands. But seven years of singing opera and chamber music have prepared her well for this kind of performance.
I spend a lot of time on stage. So being in front of people or talking to people has never been something that bothers me. Just behind Ms. Costante, blue curtains subdivide a cavernous room into dozens of cubicles.

Bamford, who was in town for four shows at the Bell House, is known for her jittery, surreal monologues about mental illness, and suffers from a combination of self-proclaimed laziness and performance anxiety, which can make it difficult for her to rehearse. In , she began issuing periodic invitations, on Twitter, for fans who live in cities where she is appearing to meet her for coffee and listen to her run through her set before she performs.
A young woman waved furiously at Bamford through the window. Bamford almost always selects the first person to reply. Ceretto had brought two Polaroid cameras. She ordered a croissant, and Bamford started her set. The espresso machine shrieked. When Bamford is addressing one person, her comedic style—a childlike speaking voice intercut with squawks, growls, and a sultry baritone—both softens and intensifies.
At the Brooklyn coffee shop, she occasionally directed her rapid-fire patter into the middle distance. Outside the window, a family in matching puffer coats peered at her. Bamford was wearing a velour sweater and big sparkly earrings, her blond hair streaked with pink highlights. Because of the medications she takes, she has a tremor. Eight years ago, when Bamford was forty-one, she suffered a series of breakdowns and hospitalizations.
The run-through concluded with a warbling song about coping with loved ones.

It has helped capture those multi-trajectory needs and had another subject teacher coming down to ask about how to do it in their subject as the students declared for its benefits in their following lessons. Each pair is allocated a different sub-heading topic to work on. They select a question by a throw of the dice one dice if there are Qs, 2 dice if there are etc.
The timer starts and they write down all they know on that topic in the 3 minutes allocated bullet-pointed list or annotated diagram. One side of the desks is then asked to move 2 places down the row; the one remaining is asked to move on to the next category of topic questions with their new partner — and roll the dice to begin a new round.
So, it’s no surprise that speed dating has become so popular. An activity in which And I’m not talking about remembering to wash before you go. Women are.
UofT tried a new format for their Winter General Meeting. While turnout was not spectacular, the level of engagement was amazing. Then, the speed dating. So we placed a cue card on each chair with a number on it. This number corresponds to a number that the EWB volunteers got. So, if I was 12, then whoever sat on a chair with a cue card that read 12 would come to me. We did it in such a way that people went to each volunteer. It doesnt work out perfectly but if a volunteer sees a large group or 1 person without a group, he or she can approach them.
The volunteer talks to his or her group for 5 minutes, tries to engage them by talking about their personal experience with EWB, what EWB does and just tries to form a personal connection with them so that they atleast know you. After 5 minutes, we blow a whistle and the group who were with number 12 would now shift to the volunteer number When the participants are leaving they are asked to write their name and email down on the cue card if they want to be contacted and write down the names of 2 people from EWB who they want contacting them alternatively, who they had an interesting conversation with.
TA DA! The format was really good in achieving its goal of forming personal connection and engaging newbies in conversation.
